It has been a while since I traveled internationally to see IRI’s programs in action.
This week, I was glad to return to my second home – Tanzania, where I had the privilege to see East Africa’s bright young minds in action at our Generation Democracy conference in Dar es Salam. Following Tanzania I traveled to Uganda, where I rolled up my sleeves to cleanup Nakawa Market alongside young Ugandan leaders. These amazing young people are part of our Leadership Academy Alumni, funded by USAID.
Yesterday was also the International Day of Democracy, which is a time to celebrate a democracy’s successes, but also reflect on the future. Youth involvement and leadership in political and civic life is imperative for the future of democracy. Being a leader is never easy, and frankly, it’s a dirty job sometimes. But I am more confident than ever that Uganda’s future is bright if young people like those I met yesterday are leading the way.
