Smart Governance Conference Kicks-off Tomorrow in Miami

Following three-years of Smart Governance programming with municipalities in Latin America, IRI is hosting a conference, “How Smart Governance is Transforming Local Government in the Americas,” in Miami, Florida June 23-24 at Miami Dade College.

The event will bring together public and private sector representatives from the region, civil society organizations and technology and governance practitioners to share experiences, challenges and advances on the use of technology for good governance; showcase partners’ projects, methodologies and toolkits; and bring forth lessons and recommendations to pave the way toward more effective service delivery and citizen participation.

Smart Governance helps equip public officials with skills and resources to involve citizens in decision-making and facilitate their engagement in implementing public policies.  Digital tools like secure cloud databases, crowd-sourcing, hackathons and use of social media are helping to strengthen the technical capacity of municipal governments to better serve communities.  Furthermore, burgeoning collaboration between tech companies and municipalities is showing how public-private-partnerships can be used as a tool for economic development.  New technology is also making possible regional networks that enable municipalities to confer best practices across national borders.  IRI facilitates these efforts, connecting public, private and citizen actors in the process and building broad political support for innovation.

The conference will offer a valuable opportunity for practitioners throughout the Americas to gain valuable insight on how technology solutions can transform local governments, spurring collaboration with the private sector, and making public services more efficient and responsive to citizen needs.
